LTTE chief Prabhakaran reportedly shot dead

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa worships the motherland as he arrives from Jordan at the Katunayake international air port in Colombo on Sunday, May 17, 2009. Thousands of Sri Lankans poured into the streets Sunday morning, dancing and setting off celebratory fireworks, after Rajapaksa declared victory in the country's quarter-century civil war with the separatist rebels.

Prabhakaran shot dead while trying to break army siege: Lanka

Colombo: Tamil Tiger supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran was on Monday shot dead by Sri Lankan special forces as he tried to stage a dramatic breakout from the army encirclement, a military spokesman said.

Prabhakaran and his top aides came out of their last hiding place in a small convoy of van and an ambulance and tried to drive out of the war zone, but were gunned down, he said.

However, the army is withholding an official announcement till a DNA test of the bodies are conducted. The Tiger chief was killed with two others, who are yet to be identified but believed to be his closest associates LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Sea Tigers' chief Soosoi.

The 26-year civil war that has fractured Sri Lanka has come to a horrific close, with the surviving Tamil Tiger rebel leaders declaring an end to their struggle to build a breakaway military state, their all-controlling leader reported dead, and their dwindling rump of fighters surrounded by the burnt corpses of thousands of civilians.

NOW WHAT WILL BE THE FUTURE OF TAMILS IN SRILANKA?
